What is ISO/IEC 20000-1?
This standard states the requirements for an IT service management system. This system can be used by an IT service provider (internal and external) to ensure an approved level of service is delivered to their customers (internal and external).
Most businesses rely on information technology as one of their core business services. Many key operational processes rely on IT and changes within these processes require changes to the IT systems - affecting hardware, software, communications and support. This is the realm of IT service management and the scope of ISO/IEC 20000-1.
(Note: ISO/IEC 20000 was derived from BS 15000 in late 2005 with minor changes.)
Who can use ISO/IEC 20000-1
ISO/IEC 20000-1 is applicable to all sizes of organisation providing IT service management activities who wish to benchmark their existing IT service management. ISO/IEC 20000-1 is a British standard developed by the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) that is gaining worldwide acceptance.
Are you eligible for the certification of ISO/IEC 20000-1
This certification scheme applies to the provision of management IT services to internal and / or external customers. It does not apply to products or services, except where the deliverable is IT service management. As a result, the scheme is applicable to organisations in any industrial sector who want certification for the management of their IT services to ISO/IEC 20000-1.
The management system must cover ALL of the requirements of ISO/IEC 20000, there can be no exclusions. The organisation being certified must also have management control over all the ISO/IEC 20000 processes.
For the outsourced services of the company, the itSMF Scoping Guidelines clearly set out who is eligible. This will depend on the level of management control that an organisation has over its ISO/IEC 20000-1processes. To be eligible for certification within the ISO/IEC 20000-1 scheme, you must be able to show that you have management control of all of the processes set out in the ISO/IEC 20000-1 standard.
Benefits of ISO/IEC 20000-1
Reduce costs - ISO/IEC 20000-1 is management system based. The basis of the standard is the Plan-Do-Check Act cycle common with other management system standards. Which enables you to operate an integrated system and reduce duplication and costs.
Stakeholder confidence - It enables you to demonstrate best practice the standard is based on the work done by the UK Office of Government Commerce (OGC) and the internationally accepted IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) to give the user confidence that real benefits will be brought to the way your IT services are managed.
LRQA's services
The scheme requires independent verification by a third party certification body recognised by itSMF. Following a successful audit, organisations will be able to market their certification to the standard and use the itSMF logo on stationery.
LRQA is a recognised body with itSMF. LRQA was one of the first registered certification bodies to be recognised by itSMF to provide accredited assessment to ISO/IEC 20000-1.
