International Workshop Agreement 26:2017 has now been published by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). It aims to provide direction to organisations on using ISO 26000:2010 - a key guidance document on social responsibility in management systems.
Since its publication, ISO 26000:2010 has become a key reference point for organisations looking to both operate in a socially responsible manner and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The newly released IWA 26:2017 provides further guidance to organisations as to how they can maximise the benefits of ISO 26000:2010 within their existing management system.
With ISO 26000:2010 being developed before the introduction of ISO’s high level structure for all management systems, the main goal of the International Workshop Agreement was to identify how social responsibility can be integrated into the high level structure of a management system. This allows organisations to incorporate social responsibility into their existing structure more effectively, allowing them to have a more significant impact on sustainable development.
Lloyd’s Register (LR) Technical Manager – Sustainability, Ged Farmer, represented both LR and the Independent International Organisation for Certification (IIOC) in the development of IWA 26:2017 and the associated workshops. He commented, “Organisations and their stakeholders are becoming increasingly aware of both the need to operate in a socially responsible manner and the business impact of not doing so. The publication of IWA 26:2017 is an important step that links the ISO high-level structure to social responsibility management, and through this maximises the organisational benefits derived from ISO 26000:2010 and management systems.”
“Lloyd’s Register is extremely pleased to have contributed to the development of this International Workshop Agreement and we’re confident that its impact on sustainable development as a whole will be hugely positive.”
